School of Food Science and Technology
School of Food Science and Technology (SFST) was founded in 1996, originating from the Department of Agricultural Products Processing established in 1987.
SFST has 70 faculty and staff members, 90.6% of whom have doctoral degrees, 71.5% have senior professional titles, 31.12% have overseas study or visiting experience, 14 of whom are doctoral supervisors and 61 master's supervisors.
Among all the teachers, there is one of the post scientists in National Modern Agricultural Special Vegetables Industry Technology System in China, one member of the Professional Teaching Steering Committee of Food Specialty in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, seven Experts on Peripheral Assessment of National Natural Science Foundation Projects, three assessment experts on the Scientific and Technological Achievements of the Ministry of Education, three experts on Assessment of National Post-doctoral Foundation Projects, one master of Chinese Culinary Culture, two senior specialists of Agricultural Product Quality Safety and Standards of Ministry of Agriculture, , one vice chairman of Agricultural Products Processing and Storage Engineering Branch of China Agricultural Engineering Society, eight food safety experts of Hunan Food Safety Committee. There are many editorial members of various periodicals, such as “Food Science”, “Food and Machinery” ,“Journal of Food Safety & Quality”, “Journal of the Processing of Agricultural Products”, “Grain Science and Technology & Economy”, “Cereal & Food Industry” ,“Journal of Hunan Agricultural University”. SFST has three of the Discipline Leaders in Hunan Province, one of Hunan Province Outstanding Teachers, one of the Ten Outstanding Young People's Science and Technology Innovation Award Winners in Hunan Province, one of the Hunan 121 Talent Project, six of the Youth Backbone Teachers in Provincial Colleges and Universities, three recipients of the Youth Backbone Teachers in Provincial Colleges and Universities.
The total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is more than 30 million Yuan, and the teaching and scientific research room is 12,000 square meters. There are more than 30 off-campus practice bases, including four provincial excellent out-of-school practice bases and four provincial innovation bases for graduate students.
By cooperating with more than 10 countries, such as the U.S., Canada, Britain, Japan and Thailand to keep the academic symbiosis, each year SFST accepts many overseas students to study at the School and sends some excellent undergraduates to make further study abroad.
SFST has a total enrollment of 953 students of all kinds, including 173 full-time postgraduates, 41 On-the-job Master's degree candidates, 19 doctoral candidates and 720 full-time undergraduates.

SFST has many national or provincial scientific and research platforms, such as, Functional Food Sub-center of the National Plants Functional Component Utilization Engineering Technology Center, National Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Comprehensive Utilization of Citrus Resources, National Vegetable Processing Technology Research and Development Sub-center, National Research and Development Sub-center for Catfish Processing Technology, Hunan Province Key Laboratory of Food Science and Biotechnology, Hunan Fermented Food Engineering Technology Center, and Hunan Province Provincial and ministerial research platforms include Hunan Province Rapeseed Oil Nutrition Health and Deep Procession Engineering Technology Research Center, Hunan Modern Food Engineering Technology and Equipment Innovation Center, Hunan Meat Engineering Technology Research Center, and Pepper Deep Processing Technology Research Center. Additionally,it owns Hunan Food Science and Technology Practice Teaching Demonstration Center, Food Science and Engineering Laboratory (Co-constructed by Province and Ministry for Preponderant and Characteristic Subject), and Training Center for Agricultural Products Storage and Processing.
Focusing on Hunan's advantages and characteristics of intensive processing of agricultural products, the School has held the leading position in the processing of edible oils, rice, pigs, freshwater fish and chili peppers. Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, SFST has undertaken more than 30 projects, such as“973 Program”, “863 Program”, Natural Science Foundation, Science and Technology Support Plan, with an average annual scientific research funding of nearly 10 million Yuan. It has won two second prizes of National Scientific and Technological Progress, 15 provincial and ministerial awards for scientific and technological progress, nearly 100 authorized national invention patents and two national food standards. More than 50 monographs and textbooks have been published, and nearly 1,000 academic papers have been published.
SFST actively serves the needs of social development, through the selection of scientific and technological commissioners, the establishment of scientific and technological food enterprises, the construction of teaching and research bases and technology transfer, to promote local economic development, safeguard food safety and build new countryside services.
Relying on the research technology, the school has set up several influential science and technology-based school-run food enterprises, cooperated with more than 100 enterprises in and out of the province in the fields of learning, research and production, and have industrialized more than ten kinds of foods with local characteristics. Accordingly, nearly 15 billion Yuan of economic benefits for enterprises have been created.
