School of Foreign Languages
School of Foreign Languages (SFL) of Hunan Agricultural University (HNAU) traces its beginnings to March 1951, when the Teaching and Researching Section of Foreign Languages of Hunan Agricultural College was established. In 1993, the Department of Foreign Languages of Hunan Agricultural College was established. In 1994, the department was renamed as the Department of Foreign Languages of Hunan Agricultural University，which was formally known as the School of Foreign Languages in 2002.
The School has 104 faculty members, including six professors, 35 associate professors. Besides, SFL also employs foreign teachers from countries like the U.K., the U.S.A., Japan, and Australia and so on.
Besides two undergraduate programs in English and in Japanese, the school also offers two postgraduate programs: Master of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and Master of Translation and Interpretation. In recent years, SFL has been strengthening its reputation and influence. The school was ranked the seventh in the first round of Provincial English Specialty Evaluation of Hunan Province in 2017.
SFL consists of following departments: the Department of English, the Department of Japanese, the Department of College English Teaching, the Department of Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language, and the Teaching and Research Section of Minority Languages. In addition, SFL has two research platforms, including Culture Exchange Center for Japanese Studies of Hunan Province and the Institute of Linguistics of Hunan Agricultural University.
After over 60 years’ development, with an advanced hardware facilities and an ever-improving supporting system for teaching and research, SFL provides a digital network and multimedia foreign language teaching with students’ terminal computers linked to the internet. It has 42 multimedia language laboratories, three classrooms for multi-language simultaneous interpretation, three rooms for translation training. SFL has a large collection of books and academic journals in English, Japanese, German and Chinese.
By seeking academic collaboration with universities and institutions at home and abroad, the school has strengthened international exchanges and cooperation with universities in the U.S.A., the U.K., Japan and the Philippines, etc. It now offers cooperative training programs and exchange programs for excellent undergraduates to study abroad every year. SFL has a total of 727 students, comprised of 688 undergraduates and 39 master’s degree students. The graduates boast solid language proficiency, wide range of knowledge, outstanding professional competence and capabilities, and widely favored by employers. In terms of the employment position, the graduates mainly work in the fields of education, mass media, foreign exchange, economy, trade, science and technology, public undertakings and government departments.
Disciplines and Degrees
l Second-Category Master Degree Program: Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics
The program trains MA candidates to become scholars and teachers of English language, literature and culture in diverse intellectual environment. It offers the chance for students with special interests to focus their study on English literature, theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, translation studies, and cultural studies. SFL has been authorized by Ministry of Education to recruit students of MA Program in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics since 2006. Currently we have 188 master’s degree students and 39 MA candidates.
l Professional Master Degree Program: Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI)
The MTI program aims at cultivating candidates’ capability in translation and interpreting, literary translation and the translation of documents concerning science, technology, business, law and international politics, besides assisting them in developing an excellent command of English. It was authorized to recruit students of MTI in 2018.
l English Language and Literature
The Department of English is committed to cultivate undergraduate students with solid professional knowledge, good language proficiency, strong communicative skills, wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge, critical thinking skills, high moral standards and an international outlook. It offers courses on the English language, English literature, English-Chinese translation, English-Chinese interpretation, intercultural communication and so on. With increasing focus on internationalization, cooperative programs with overseas universities have been initiated in recent years.
l Japanese Language and Literature
The Department of Japanese aims at training undergraduate students with deep professional knowledge, excellent humanistic qualities, and international competitiveness. It offers courses on the Japanese language, Japanese literature, Chinese- Japanese translation, Chinese-Japanese interpretation, and intercultural communication. The Department has accelerated its course of internationalization. It has cooperative training programs (namely the “2+2” and “3+1” models) and undergraduate exchange programs with universities in Japan.

l Culture Exchange Center for Japanese Studies of Hunan Province
One of the five think tanks of the People’s Government of Hunan Province, and it aims to promote the cooperation and communication between Japan and Hunan Province.
l The Institute of Linguistics of HUNAU
The institute covers studies on English studies, Japanese studies and Chinese studies.
Centering on the study of the fields of language and teaching, SFL has made significant achievements in academic research. In the past ten years, the faculty has published 25 monographs, 24 translated works, 69 course books and nearly 1000 academic papers.
SFL has taken active part in social services in following national and social development strategies. SFL has participated in a number of international conferences in or out of Hunan Province, and some formal foreign affair activities of departments of the government. Besides, SFL sends excellent students to practice in the U.S.A. or Japan and other relevant countries as well.
