Chen JinXiang
Professor Chen Jin-Xiang graduated from Jiangsu Agricultural College in 1982 and obtained an agronomy master degree. He is a leading teacher for master and postgraduate's tutors in crop study science in Hunan Agricultural University. In 1993 and 1997 respectively, he studied in the Universidad Autonoma Chapingo in Mexico, engaging in the research into the biotechnology of Cotton and the utilization of Mexico's cotton varieties resources . Now he is the deputy director-general of the Chinese Society of Cotton Science, Vice director of Hunan Cotton Academic Council in Hunan Province. He is also a member of examining and approving Committee and the fibers committee, Hunan Agricultural Committee, Hunan Agricultural Standardization Committee, Hunan's outstanding young and middle-aged teachers. He invented a new method of the first two-line hybrid cotton-sensitive male sterility at home and abroad. And the technical system of the Cotton water floating nursery is established in 2006, leading the world in this respect. He got 5 patents on the invention practical technology. At present, he mainly takes up cotton genetic breeding and cultivation, majoring in the researches of high-yield and good-quality hybrid cotton breeding, and efficient breeding technology system in cotton.

Chen Liyun
Professor Chen Liyun, who enjoys special government allowance, is a researcher and doctoral mentor on seed science and engineering in HUNAU. He is the leading professor of the PhD subject on seed science and engineering and member of Hunan Agriculture Committee. He is also known as the deputy director-general of the Hunan Association of Seed Science; member of the Examing Committee of Agricultural Products of Hunan Province, chairman of the Professional Committee of Rice, member of the Examing Committee of Advanced Science and Technology of Hunan Province.

Scope of Research: theories and techniques of utilizing the advantanges of hybrid rice.

Deng Ziniu
Professor Deng Ziniu is a doctoral mentor and the leading professor on the PhD subject of pomology. He obtained a post-doctorate degree with Universit¨¤ degli Studi di Catania and is currently a visiting scholar there, working as a professor on the subject of gardening and agro-product processing. In 1988, as an italian scolar, Deng went to the Department of Plant Pathology of the University of Nebraska for collaborative research.

Now, he is holding posts as head of the key laboratory of cell engineering in HUNAU; director of the standing committee of Chinese Society of Citriculture;member of the technology committee of Agricultural Standardization of Hunan Province;member of Italia's Gardening Academy; member of Italia's Academy of Agro-genetics and member of the executive committee of the international citrus academy.

Scope of research: plant genetics and breeding, the building up of embryogenic callus, protoplast culture, cell fusion, selection of desease-resistant (referring to citrus wilt ) and mutative cell lines, and the detoxication of citrus stem tip when being grafted.

Guan Chunyun
Professor Guan, a mongolian ethnic, is an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, a leading doctoral mentor of the first-calss subject of crop science, and a doctoral and MPhil mentor of the subject of plant cultivation.

As a visiting senior scholar, he studied in Univesity of Alberta in Canada from 1993 to 1994. In the following five years (1995-2000), he was president of HUNAU. Currently, he is head of the Research Institute of Oil-bearing Crops of HUNAU; chief of the provincial key laboratory of crop genetic engineering in Hunan; and the person-in-charge of the Hunan Branch of the National Center for Improvement of Oil-bearing Crops. He also holds important posts such as: the councilman of Groupe Consultatif International de Recherche sur le Colza (GCIRC); vice-chairman of Hunan Scientific Institution; the convener of the Second Discipline Evaluation Subcommittee of the State Degree Committee; and an expert of the Discipline Evaluation Committee of the State Council.

Scope of Research: Modern Breeding of Rapeseeds and its Molecular Basis, ecophysiology and molecular biology of rapeseed, cultivation methods of high-yielding and quality rapeseed and utilization of such products

Liu Qiang
Professor Liu Qiang, the Party Committee Secretary of HUNAU and a doctoral mentor, is the leading professor of the first-class PhD subject on the Utilization of Agricultural Resources and enjoys special government allowance. He is among the acedemic backbone of Hunan's young and middle-aged scientists. Also he is the head of the Research Institute of Plant Nutrition, one of the first young backbone teachers in higher education of Hunan Province. Moreover, he holds important posts such as: the director of the Standing Committee of Soil Science Society of China; director of the standing committee of Chinese Society of Plant Nutrition and Fertilizer Science; and director-general of the Hunan Society of Soil and Fertilizer Science.

Scope of Research: palnt nutrition physiology, fertilizing theory and techniques, research and manufacturing of new types of fertilizer, soil contamination and its prevention and cure.

Liu Xiao-chun
Liu Xiao-chun, (female), is a doctoral mentor and leading professor of the MPhil programme on Animal Genetic Thremmatology and Reproduction, and has been enjoying the special government allowence since 1993. She was a visiting senior scholar in Moscow Veterinary University from 1990 to 1991 and a co-researcher for scientific collaboration in Russia Academy of Agricultural Science from 1998 to 2004. She was once awarded honors as "A Pacesetting Woman Contributor" in Hunan's higher education system, and as a National "Woman Pacesetter" in 2006. She also holds a long-term post as an expert judge responsible for approval of grant applications of major projects to the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Professor Liu has for long been engaging in the research into the selection of boars for breeding prupose, as well as in the studies on the application of molecular biotechnology to animal breeding.

Liu Zhonghua
Professor Liu Zhonghua is a leading mentor of the PhD subject on tea science at HUNAU who enjoys special government allowance granted by the State Coucil.

His important posts are: the director-general of the Hunan Society of Tea Science. Besides, he also works as an expert judge of: the National 863 Projects, the National Awards for Science and Technology, Key Projects of Int'l Co-operation, the Innovation Funds for Medium-Sized and Small Enterprises by the Minisrty of Science and Technology.

In addition to the above, Liu, being a senior expert of the Minisrty of Agriculture, is also a member of the editorial boards of journal of tea science and journal of china tea; sub-editor of both Natraul Products & Human Health and Journal of HUNAU; and routine editor of journal of chinese medicine research.

He is widely recognised as one of the most outsatnding backbone young teachers in Hunan province; one of the most outstanding young and middle-aged experts in Hunan, the academic leader and one of the most talented perosns of the millenium in Hunan Province.

Scope of Research: Extraction and purification of the functional components of tea leaves, Theory and Technology of the porcessing of tea leaves, quality chemistry of tea leaves, fine processing and comprehensive utilization of tea leaves, research and exlointation of natural products, technology for further exploitation of medical offcinal resources, and further exloitation of farm and sideline products, etc.

Peng Shaobing
Peng Shaobing, a chair professor of the Furong Scholars in HUNAU, is a senior plant physiologist at the international research institute of rice and a doctoral mentor as well. He obtained both Master's and Doctor's Degrees from both the University of California at Davis and the University of Florida and also did post-doctoal studies. From Oct 1991, he started working at the International Reseach Institute of Rice in the Philippines. The scope of his research includes photosynthesis, nutrition physiology, high yield physilology, stress physiology, plant breeding and plant culture management. Currently, he is a member of the editorial board of Crop Science, Field Crops Research and Plant Production Science.

He was awarded honor as: The Most Outstanding Young Scientists" by CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research); Honorary Scientist by Rural Development Administration of the Republic of Korea in 2003; Fellow of ASA (American Society of Agronomy)in 2004 and Fellow of CSSA (Crop Science Society of America) in2005.

His thesis, Rice yields decline with higher night temperature from global warming, which was published in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy Sciences) in 2004, was selected by American magazine Discovery as one of the annual 100 most important thesis of the year 2004, ranking 68th. Besides, in 2005 he was employed as a chair professor at HUNAU, lecturing on Crop Culture & Tillage Science under the "Incetive Plan for Furong Scholars of Hunan Province"

Shi Xuehui
Professor Shi, (female), a doctoral mentor, has constantly been recognised as an outstanding Party member and teacher in HUNAU. In 2000, she was given the title of 'A Model of Teacher Ethics' by HUNAU, and In February of 2004, she was recognised as an Outstanding worker in national activities concerning agricultural science and technology of 2003 granted by the Ministry of Agriculture and was awarded Model of 'Women-Red-banner Pacesetter' of Changsha city by the Women's Union in March of the same year. Moreover in Nov 2005, 14 national ministries, which included the Ministry of Personnel, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture, etc., gave her the honor as an active participator in the national 'Sanxiaxiang Movement'[1] for the promotion of technology, culture and hygiene. Professor Shi also took part in the selection of one new strain of peach and presided over the selection of four new strains of grape.

Wang Guoliang
Professor Wang Guoliang obtained post-doctorates from both Texas A&M Universityand University of California at Davis, and is now working in HUNAU as a doctoral mentor whose speciality is the genetic thremmatology.Professor wang is a Principal Investigator and Senior Scientist in the Department of Research on disease-resistance of rice in the Insititute of Molecular Studies of Agriculture and Biology of the National University of Singapore; he is also the Associate Professor of The Ohio State University; A chair professor and one of the Furong Scholars in HUNAU.

His main research interest is to understand the genetic and molecular mechanismof plant resistance to pathogens. Both genetic and genomic approaches are being used in our laboratory. We are currently using rice as a model plant to clone disease resistance genes and genes involved in resistance responses to rice blast and bacterial blight pathogens. In particular, we are interested in understanding the molecular basis of broad-spectrum resistance to rice blast resistance genes. Two recently cloned blast resistance genes [Pi2(t) and Pi9(t)] in our lab are excellent materials for this research purpose since both genes confer a high level of resistance to diverse isolates. Understanding the relationship between programmed cell death and disease resistance is another focus in our lab. We have recently cloned the Spl11 gene that controls onset of lesion mimic formation in rice. Detailed analysis of the gene function will provide new insights into the mechanism of cell death in plants.

Using different genomics approaches, we are interested in understanding the transcriptome of resistance reaction to rice blast. Over 67,000 ESTs and 600,000 SAGE tags have been sequenced and analyzed. Many novel defense genes have been identified. Functional analysis of these genes in disease resistance is in progress using several new techniques such as microarrays, reverse genetics and transgenic analysis. Recently, we are using the new technology MPSS to comprehensively characterize the rice genome. Our ultimate goal is to genetically engineer crop plants for disease resistance in such a way as to reduce the use of environmentally damaging pesticides.

Xiao Langtao
Professor Xiao is a doctoral mentor and a leading supervisor of the first-class PhD programme on biology. He is head of the key laboratory in Hunan Province for the research into plant hormone and its growth and development, and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Phytophysiology and Molecular Biology. In addtion, he works as the sub-editor of the HUNAU JOURNAL and has membership of the Youth's Standing Committee of Hunan Province. He is also a beneficiary of an HUNAU programme for the nurturing of the top-rated faculty members.

Professor Xiao's research focuses on the substances in plant's growth and his speciality is Bioinformatics.

Xiong Xingyao
Professor Xiong is a doctoral mentor and leading professor of the first-class PhD subject on horticulture. He obtained a post-doctorate from the Potato Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculure of Canada and then got a permanent post in the Ministry. He is the President of the College of Horticultural and Landscape in HUNAU and the chief expert in Chansha Branch of the National Centre for Orange and Tangerines Improvement and head of the Research Center of Potato Engineering Technology. He also works as a chair professor of Jishou University; the chairman of Hunan Potato Association; the Deputy Director-General of the horticulture Academy of Hunan Province; the vice president of the Flower Association of Hunan Province; and the Director of Standing Committees of both Chinese Societies of horticulture Science and Citriculture Science.

Scope of research: patato genetics and breeding.

Yan Xinquan
Yan is a researcher and doctoral mentor on crop genetic thremmatology and breeding in Hunan Agricultural University and enjoys special allowance by the State Council.

From Oct 2002 to Sep 2003, he was in the West Nusa Tenggara Province of Indonesia to carry out a China-Indonesian co-operation project on hybrid rice and took charge as the leader of the expert panel. Yan has all along been devoting himself to the scientific research into the selective breeding of new strains of rice. He was also for long the deputy director at the teaching and research section of plant breeding, as well as at the laboratory of plant genetic thremmatology.

He has presided over 15, in all, key scientific research projects of both national and municipal levels. His achievements are fruitful, with one 3rd prize of the Scientific and Technological Progress of China and one top prize of municipal level. The essays under his name amounts to as much as 34 and he was either involved or edited 3 monographs and 3 textbooks for university students and college students respectively.

Zhou Puhua
Professor Zhou is a doctoral mentor who enjoys the special government allownce subsidized by the State Council, and a member of Discipline Evaluation Board of the State Council and boasts a title of National Model Teacher. He is the winner of the Xu Teli Educator's Award of Hunan Province, and was given the honor of 'Star Teacher' of HUNAU. His speciality is Botany and Developmental Biology.

Zhou Qingming
Professor Zhou Qingming received his doctoral degree in the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wu han, Hubei Province. He currently is the Principal of the Hunan Agricultural University, vice-secretary of school Party Committee and professor on university's doctoral program. Professor Zhou carries respectively some other responsibilities. Nationally speaking, he is a member of the Agriculture Consultancy of China, trustee of China Agriculture Study Committee. Within the Hunan province, professor Zhou is a prestigious man. He is the director-general of the Hunan Crop Science Committee, vice-chairman of the Hunan Agriculture Study Committee, vice director-general of the Hunan Genetics Study Committee, vice-chairman of the Hunan Administration and Management Study Committee and vice-chairman of the Association of Hunan Sci-tech Achievements and Technological Market. Furthermore, he is the deputy director of Hunan Crop Species Assessment Committee, member of the Science and Technology Award Committee of Hunan, director of the Academic Committee of the Hunan Agricultural University and chairman of the Committee on Conferring the Degree of the Hunan Agricultural University. In terms of honorable titles, Mr. Zhou was kindly awarded the Exellent Teacher of China, Outstanding Party Member of the university and Advanced Worker and etc., and received the honor of Distinguished Public Institution of Hunan as its legal representitive. He was given the Outstanding Award once by the government of Hunan. In considering of all his achievements, he was chosen as a candidate for the leadership of the of 1st Trans-century Academy of Hunan and that of Hunan universities, enjoying the special allowance of the state council. Professor Zhou is the chief expert in the Biological Research and Application of Hunan province, among the first pack of experts of the 121 New-millennium Talents Project of Hunan, selected and sent specially to party school of the CPC Central Committee and the Oxford uiversity.

Professor Zhou has presided over dozens of science research projects. Among them you can find two for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one ranked key project in the state Education Ministry, another same level for the Agriculture Department and one identified as Key Scientific and Technological Project during 15th five-year plan, with the rest of the projects belonging to the municipal level. One project was given the top award of Hunan Scientific Progress , one won the second prize, two came the third place and one ranked the 4th. Furthermore, the education department of Hunan has given the 2nd prize of Science Progress to one of his projects. Mr. Zhou has published over 100 essays on various topics, ranging from education research to management, in some famous magazines, both domestic and overseas, like China Education Press Agency, Journal of Higher Education and Field Abstracts of Britain, and has edited chiefly one monographic book, helping the edit of anther.

Scope of research: Professor Zhou is always dedicated to the education and science-research work of paddy and the genetics and breeding of tobacco.

Zou Yingbin
Professor Zou Yingbin, who is a researcher and doctoral mentor in the Hunan Agricultural University who enjoys special allownce granted by the State Council. He is one of China's young and middle-aged significant contributors in agriculture and also a member of the expert panel on rice production appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture. From 1987 to 1988, he was in Mississippi State University for advanced ecophysiology studies and went to Ethiopia lecturing on crop cultivation and seed breeding in 2001. Between 2002--2005, Mr. Zou frequented international study and exchange on rice. His main domain of research falls into rice biology and ecology, its cultivation and growth stimulation. At the same time, he was fecund in his endeavors to contribute to the country. During the period of the 9th and 10th 'five-year-plan', he presided over 3 key national research projects, successfully set down 2 international cooperation projects and thus received crowds of prizes, one for the 2nd prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of China, 4 of 2nd prize of Municipal Scientific and Technological Progress and 2 came in the 3rd prize, to name just a few. Furthermore, Mr. Zou himself enjoying the ownership of 2 national invention patents and one computer software copyright with over 80 essays and 5 monographs.
